Screening for alcoholism – In general young adults who engage in binge drinking are open about their activities. There are also those who may have developed chronic alcoholism, but have not recognised that they have a problem. These individuals tend to be more secretive about their activities. In such circumstances the application of the CAGE questionnaire may be of help. This consists of a series of four questions (Table 3-5) that are asked verbally. A positive response is not diagnostic of alcoholism, but it is generally considered that two such responses should alert the interviewer to the likelihood of the patient suffering from alcoholism.
